Five Things Friday: April Edition

in Me

I don’t know if this is a cliché old-person saying or what, but seriously, where does the time go?  I think we are finally over the deep freeze in Michigan as after a few nice days, 50′ feels chilly, where it felt like a heat wave just a few weeks ago! Let’s talk about some things that have been going on this past month:

I went to Toronto!

If you don’t know yet, I co-host the Single and Sweaty Podcast with a fellow single person (co-single? singleton? is there a gender-neutral word?), Alex over at Distance Obsessed (If you don’t listen, do it!). He came down to Detroit to visit me last month to run a horrid race, and this month my sisters and I road-tripped to Toronto to visit!

I was thrilled to be able to drop-in to a Crossfit box there (it was my first time dropping in somewhere new) and was put through a crazy workout at the very-accommodating Academy of Lions. The “Epic” workout as they called it was:

25 Toes To Bar
25 Deadlift (95#)
25 Box Jumps (20 inch)
25 Burpees
25 KettleBell Swings – Overhead (35#)
3 Rounds.  30 Minute Timecap.

I made it  2 rounds, 94 reps. If I was at my home box, I probably would have finished past the time-cap, but dang, I was done after that!

My sisters and I then did tons of shopping, snagged some great deals, ate a lot of junk food, and didn’t kill each-other being in the car for hours on end.

I am falling in love.. with Olympic Lifting

Seriously. Love. Traditional Crossfitting has taken a slight backseat (at least for last 6 weeks, and the next three weeks), where I am only doing WODs 2-3x a week instead of 5x. I am Oly Lifting 3x a week and just love every single thing about it. We are re-testing our max lifts next week so hopefully I will see some noticeable progress when we do!

Double-Unders Everyday

Despite my love affair with Oly, I am still working on a couple of Crossfit skills, specifically muscle-up progressions and double-unders. Seriously, double-unders everyday. Well, every gym day, so 5x a week I am putting in about 3-5 minutes. Not a ton of work, but enough to realize that I need more work! I can point out quite a few things I am doing wrong, and the lovely followers on instagram gave me some more tips. Just have to keep at it!

Finally I am up to consistently being able to do 5+ in a row, but still struggle doing ten in a row often. I am loving my new RPM Rope and even though I highly recommend RX Ropes to just about everyone, my speed rope has helped me significantly in feeling more confident with my DUs!

I cleaned out my closet..

On Black Friday, I donated so much stuff, and on Easter I had another urge to do the same. I went through ALL of my clothes. Workout clothes, winter clothes, summer clothes, work clothes. From my former banker days, I had suits with tags on them that will no longer fit with my shoulders, and so many matching pants that I cannot pull over my thighs. I have been living in my Cocabang jeans, but still had plenty of jeans from other retailers that I loved but haven’t worn in a while, so tried on every single pair I owned. TWO pairs fit; and seven pair of jeans and two pair of capris had to go.

My two sisters fared very well from this purge, and I feel so much better letting so many things go!

..and then added to it

Now that my wardrobe inevitably will consist of yoga pants and booty shorts, I was quite excited to be able to be one of the first to score a pair of shorts from Fran’s Closet RX! Now I just need the weather to get back to being consistently warm (and I need to clean my mirror..).

Also, not to be cheating on Fran’s Closet, but one of my long-time favorite WOD shirt companies, Latitude Gear RX, just launched some new tees and tanks for the spring, including one for Murph, which is a must-have. After they posted one of my favorite lifting quotes on Facebook, I suggested they put it on a tank top.. and now I have one of these coming soon! Pre-order yours today and you can get 25% off this, or anything on the site with my code “winetoweights25” at checkout. Use it, share it.

if it doesn't scare you it's not heavy enough

That about sums up all that has been going on lately!

Your turn..
Have you gone out of your way to get in a workout while traveling?
Are you a double-under master? Can you do one? 5? 10? Consistently? Help!

Do you ever do a closet-purge? Does it frustrate you when nothing fits anymore?
What is your favorite WOD clothing company?

Your double-under’s look good! I got double unders last year, after TWO YEARS of trying (lol), and they’re terrible looking. I think I stick my butt out too much, and it just looks weird.

I recently cleaned out my closet as well and donated TONS of stuff to a local consignment shop. I’ve been careful not to restock the empty space but I’m thinking carefully about new clothes/items I want for my honeymoon. It feels so good to clean out the old and shuffle in the new 🙂
Most of my vacations this year have been centered around running so it’s a win/win! If I’m not traveling for a race I’ll try to get in some yoga or a short run, the best way to see a new place 🙂

Hi Jennifer1
I’ve been crossfitting for almost six months and I was thrilled to find your blog. I have a question for you though… my gym (I mean box, I just can’t say it…I’m old school) is starting an Olympic lifting program 3 x week and I wonder if I should join. I am (obviously) still working on form for a lot of my lifts but I really want to get better and the wods don’t always give a chance to slow down and focus (gotta go fast!). My question is, should I? I don’t want to hold up the class by needing too much attention from the coach. By the way I am 48. I sure wish I had found crossfit in my 20s!
Thanks!
Maria B.

Thanks for visiting, Maria!

I would say 100% YES!!! I am paying extra for my Oly-specific class, but we have people from all skill levels doing it. The coach broke it up into class sizes of no more than 5 people at a time (our class has 3-4), so there is tons of individual focus. And it’s an hour of focusing solely on form and technique, rather than the go-go-go of Crossfit. It is soo important in moves like snatch and clean and jerk to be doing it properly, for safety and injury prevention!
I can only assume that your coach is properly trained, but I know ours started EVERYONE with a PVC pipe, regardless of strength or skill. Then our first couple weeks were barbell only, until he thought you were proficient enough to move forward to something else.
I highly highly HIGHLY recommend you do the course if you are looking to improve your technique, lift heavier, or just be safer!
My coach posts some tips on instagram if you are on there (@jekyllhyde_coach) and want to check it out.
