Learn to love yourself.. the rest will fall into place.

in Me

On Sunday I had an opportunity to attend the taping of the final reveal show for a couple on Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. They are a local couple who have worked out with the trainers from my Crossfit box (pretty awesome!), and who committed the past year to transforming their lives for not only their children, but for themselves.

Chris Powell, the host of the show, is one of the most inspiring people (and one of the most good-looking..) to me. He is a personal trainer, but he is also a life coach, whose goal is not only to help people to lose weight, but to completely transform them.

Chris Powell and me.. 😉

Something Chris said that resonated with me was that transformation cannot happen until you can learn to love yourself. Until you can learn that you are important and until you can learn to value yourself, no amount of diet and exercise is going to make you successful on your health and fitness journey. Yes, anyone can lose weight. And yes, anyone can commit to diet and exercise and many people will be successful at it. But until you really learn to accept yourself, those changes are only temporary. Change happens from within.

I haven’t had a particularly difficult life, and never had any physical or mental limitations, but I have had to overcome some things in my past that had broken me down but made me who I am today. My first serious boyfriend at age 19 was controlling and would forbid me from going out with my friends and when I tried to break up with him, he refused to let it go and pretty much stalked me. From there, I was in another long-term relationship, married in 2005, just two months before my dad passed away, which was probably the toughest time I ever went through. I was divorced in 2009 and left with the house and an uncomfortable mortgage payment that I think I am stuck with forever. Then my last long-term relationship,  just about three years, half of the time I didn’t know if we were still going to be together the next day and despite being best friends, it was just an emotional roller coaster. While these things didn’t affect me physically on the outside, they absolutely affected me on the inside.

But now.. I have found Crossfit. And through the physical and mental torture I put myself through about five times a week, I have found me. And I am doing everything for me. It is not selfish at all, but it is something that everyone needs to do to take complete control of your life. Like the airlines tell you to always put the mask on yourself first, and then help the next person? That’s how your life needs to be-  you first, then everything else will follow. Once you are happy with yourself, you start to consciously eliminate the negative things in your life and welcome the positive. There isn’t always tangible evidence of changing like weight loss or anything like that, but I can’t even describe how much better I feel now than where I was at three months ago.

I can’t disclose any details of the show (until it airs and you all check me out on TV on ABC sometime in the late spring), but both contestants went through amazing transformations on the outside, but also on the inside with the help of Chris (I met him – we’re on a first name basis now ;)).

This is what I want to do with my life. I want to not only show people the right way to diet and exercise, but the right way to change how they feel about themselves.

Last Monday, I passed my personal trainer certification. I am now officially an ISSA-certified personal trainer.

Cert_Logo

You would think I would be blogging and tweeting and posting this all over the place, but it’s a bit surreal. I have been studying for the past 8 months, and studying even harder for the past 3 months, putting in an hour here or there on the weekdays and multiple hours on the weekend. The fact that I am now a certified fitness trainer is still sinking in, and I am still trying to figure out what to do next.

I want to take on clients. I want to do personal training, but I also want to help people to get them to the point where they learn to value themselves and love themselves enough to make sacrifices and make the changes needed so they can have a total transformation. I want people to feel the way about themselves the way that I feel about me.

And now to plan..

Congratulations on earning your personal training certification! Yay! It’s so true what Chris Powell said, and I’ve heard it mentioned several different ways. You have to believe that you deserve to be better in order to take the steps to get there. I read “The Paleo Coach” by Jason Seib, and he said something similar — you can’t fix a body you hate. It’s great to hear you’re in a much better place now.

Thanks NJ! It’s nice when you can truly value yourself enough to focus on what you need; I just need to pick a direction to go with it.. 🙂

Beautiful Jennifer. I was just wondering when you would announce that and now here it is. Good for you and congratulations! And so true: we must love ourselves before change can set in. It was interesting to hear about your past boyfriends. I think its great you are forging your own way now and that you have found so much happiness through crossfit. Sounds to me like you have found your place.

I keep trying to explain to people how Crossfit changes you inside; it’s something that I don’t think you can really “get” until you do it for awhile. It’s so much more than a workout program.
And yeah, my boyfriend history is full of drama.. even when I think it’s drama-free, something else has to happen.. blah. 🙂

I’m glad I can publicly congratulate you now 🙂 This is a great post, and I think you will do an awesome job at helping your clients feel good about themselves! I know when I was overweight I spent a lot of time feeling like I didn’t deserve happiness, which definitely made my self care routine nonexistent. Everyone deserves a fighting chance to be as happy as they want, but its definitely an internal choice first. Having someone to help you see that is a gift!

Congratulations on your certification!! I’ve had my materials for over a year but I feel like I can’t teach someone else until I figure it out for myself.

I love Chris Powell and love that show!

~jenniferlynn April 18, 2013 at 10:58 am

I posted the pic of me and him on FB and so many people didn’t know who he was! I’m like how do you NOT know Chris Powell?!?! *drool* 😉 I just love everything he stands for and he is so real. Except for abs; I think those are implants.. hehe. So down to earth and genuinely cares about people.

First of all – I’m absolutely jealous that you met chris powell. he is deliciously handsome. second of all – I am totally with him on the idea of learning to love yourself. SOOOO SO many people start a healthy living journey with the idea that if they change the way they look they will love themselves more. but that isn’t always (very rarely) true. Most of the transformations I’ve seen may have started that way – but just like you said with CrossFit it was in the journey that you found yourself. I’ve said from the beginning that it isn’t about the before and after – it is all about the journey (one of the reasons for my blog name!). Lastly CONGRATS! I felt the same way when I become L1 certified. Like – I am certified to train other people – what?! ha. Along with knowing all about the physical stuff – personal training/coaching requires a lot of emotional stuff too! You’ll figure it out!

Yes.. it was hard to focus on the couple rather than staring at Chris.. 😉 I did get a pic of his abs, too.. mmhmm.. hehe.

And your journey is completely inspiring!! And I’m sure you can speak to this more than anyone about finding your place and learning to love yourself so you are able to make those changes and sacrifices to be better.

And GIRL – I am SOOOO excited and envious of your upcoming ventures!!! What an amazing opportunity to be able to do what you love!

L1 certification is on my list.. if I can get my blogging to start paying for it… 😉

Thanks for all the support along my journey, too!

There is such truth in this post. Learning to love myself was the first and most important step in my own journey to healthy living. And I’ve found when I veer off the path, it is often because I am judging myself instead of loving myself.

Lauren April 23, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Congrats! I rarely comment but wanted to say that establishing a support system, including my trainer, has been a key, key element of my weight loss journey (27 pounds since January and about 50 more to go!). Once I got to the point where I knew I was ready and committed to make a change, I knew I needed to surround myself with people that supported me, so unlike previous attempts to lose weight, I’ve been vocal about it with close friends and family and it has made ALL the difference. Anyway – huge congrats to you!

~jenniferlynn April 23, 2013 at 2:47 pm
