Lady Lifter Spotlight: Whitney!

in Lady Lifter Spotlight

I don’t know if you ladies are like me, but when I stumble upon a fellow female fitness blogger who happens to have a love for lifting, I get all giddy and just want to read all there is to know about her and how she got started. There is just something so inviting about women to lift! Like we are soul sisters.. or something.

If you or someone you know wants a chance to be featured, please contact me! Always looking for new bloggers, tweeters, or even just supporters of lady lifters and have plenty of open spots!

Anyway, I found this week’s spotlight lifter via Twitter when Janice over at Fitness Cheerleader tweeted about a guest poster.  I instantly was inspired; perhaps because in the article there was a picture of her doing pistols in her office..?

What types physical activity do you enjoy?

Lifting heavy, leisure walks, and a love/hate relationship with HIIT. I like participating in 5K races because they’re fun and you get a t-shirt. I’m easy to please 🙂

How did you get started in weight lifting? How long have you been lifting?

I’ve been lifting weights since I was 20 when I decided to lose weight and be healthy. My mom is the one who suggested I start lifting weights and not just focus on cardio.

It’s been just a few months, perhaps about six months, since I’ve been lifting heavy. I started being interested in the subject of lifting heavy when I searched “how much weight should women lift” on Google in January of this year and came across some amazing women doing amazing things.

I started with just buying a barbell and some heavy weights I could lift in my apartment. I sometimes use the gym at work so I can use a squat rack to lift heavier. My dream is to buy a squat rack for my apartment. Then I’ll have the perfect home gym. I love working out at home for the convenience.

Favorite workout or lift?

Squats and deadlifts. Love them.

Current lifting-related goal:

Squatting 1 times my body weight and deadlifting 1.5 times my bodyweight. And I’d love to do a head stand push up.

Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:

Start off with simple lifts, get proper form down, and gradually progress. Incorporate fitness and lifting into your life and not the other way around. And try not to compare your goals, progress, and fitness level to others.

I would just say try it. You might fall in love, like I did.

I’ve been seriously neglecting my strength training! This post just revived my desire to get back to it! I’m wanting to get a straight barbell to add to my home gym too. I’d love to get back to deadlifts and squats with a straight bar rather than a kettlebell or dumbbells.

Wow what a great site! And great spotlight!
I just joined Canopi and have been wanting to find more sites that feature lifting, running and that enjoy celebrating too 🙂 I am a big fan of wine but actually do Scotch and Bourbon reviews on my site.
I helped bring the Sport of Strongman to the US in the late 1990s and have some interviews with some World Champion Strongmen. I have coached champions in multiple countries.
Jennifer Lynn,
Congrats on a very cool site and inspiring women to lift. It is a great thing and you are doing a great service.
Whitney,
Congrats on the great biceps 🙂 and I agree with your philosophy of getting your form right first before you go heavy. Squats and deadlifts are two of my favorite as well.

Great site!
