in Lady Lifter Spotlight

As a member of Healthy Living Bloggers, I am exposed to so many ladies who have a similar passion for the healthy lifestyle. What I love finding even more is those ladies that are so fresh in the healthy living life, that you can sense the excitement of finding new healthy foods to try or new workouts to do.

This week’s spotlight is on a newbie to working out (first time was 6 months ago!) and using her blog as a way to document her health and fitness journey using whole foods, strength training, and training for an upcoming half marathon! Jackie has a mindset so similar to mine, feeling empowered with weights and wanting other women to feel the same sense of confidence and strength!

What types physical activity do you enjoy?

Body Pump (barbell lifting class), cycling, running

How did you get started in weight lifting? How long have you been lifting?

I started weight lifting when I went to my first Body Pump class about six months ago. I always wanted to try weight lifting but I was very intimidated by not knowing what to lift/how to lift/how much, etc. It was a little overwhelming! Thankfully Body Pump provided a fun environment for learning how to lift, and it was set to great music! 🙂 Once I learned what I was doing, I was hooked!

Favorite workout or lift?

I think my favorite lift is Clean and Press because I feel like such a badass when I do it! Lifting the bar up over your head just makes you feel so strong and accomplished.

Current lifting-related goal:

I’m working on increasing the weight I lift, specifically my squat weight. I’m a runner who’s training for a half marathon so I know that a really strong set of legs can only help me achieve my goals!

Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:

Don’t be intimidated! 🙂 I was so nervous that I avoided weight lifting for years. Many gyms offer some sort of weight lifting class (and I think the YMCA specifically has a weight lifting for women class) so feel free to sign up, always knowing that there’s bound to be a few other new people besides yourself! If there aren’t weight lifting classes, sign up for a session or two with a personal trainer to learn the basics and get comfortable enough so that you aren’t intimidated to try it on your own.
