Five Things Friday: Single and Sweaty Edition

in CrossFit, Running

If you do not know already from my posting it in all social media channels multiple times, I am the sexier half of a podcast called Single and Sweaty with Alex of Distance Obsessed. I have been having a blast recording with him, though before Episode 7, we had never  met face to face! This all changed last weekend when he came down from the Great North to visit and scope out the “D.” And, what sort of trip would it be if the ultra-marathoner couldn’t get a run in? I had previously signed up for a 10k so it worked out well within his current training plan to also sign up for this race, a choice I think both of us regretted later.

Pineapples and Pecs

The night before the race, we recorded a live video podcast where we answered listener questions and just shared some all around awkwardness. I think “pineapples and pecs” sums up what our hour and twenty-minute live-recorded video podcast is all about, plus about 60 other things. We talked everything from our thoughts on guys and girls just being friends to how much chicken I eat in a week, to Alex talking about beef and being born to a hippy at home. Seriously, if you listen to no other episodes of ours, I recommend this one. We’re a hoot! 😉

That 10k thing

If there is one thing I have learned in Crossfit, it is to be prepared for the unknown. With this in mind you would think I would also learn to be prepared for the known. I had signed up for this 10k well in advance of the event and I had also known that Michigan has been hiding in the Polar Vortex for months and the 10-day forecast leading up to the race had never shown a temperature of more than 25′ for the high. On race day, it was 14′ at the start of the race.

Now other than it being ridiculously cold, the only time I ever ran in a temperature close to this frigid was the same event last year. Oh, and I had not run at all since November. I had an unrealistic goal of crushing my current 10k time of 1:00; I want a sub-hour 10k badly (minus the whole training to get to it), yet the only thing I have done since my last race in November, was, hmm, maybe some 20m jogs as a warm-up in class. Oops.

This was the most miserable run ever. And not like my miserable runs that I had previously complained about during my half marathon training last year. But just pure and utter misery for four miles before I felt somewhat warmed up, and succeeded by two miles of oh-my-gosh-why-did-I-do-this? Needless to say, even with my awesome motivation of listening to GirlsGoneWOD Podcast during the run, there was not even a chance of a PR this race. And oddly, it made me look forward to spring running. *shudder*

After I finished, I proceeded to meet back up with my hypothermic friend so we could get thawed and changed before scarfing down my obligatory post-race pancakes.

I clean, I jerk, and have a nice snatch?

Before you get excited about the thought of me thinking about running, let’s get back to my real love. After much debate between a supplemental powerlifting class or Olympic lifting class, I committed to a 10-week Oly program led by one of the coaches at our sister gym, and co-owner of JekyllHYDE Apparel. I had my first class this week and was extremely humbled breaking down the movements in to more detail than we tend to get into during the normal Crossfit classes. What I like even better is that our class has only four students, compared to the traditional classes that have anywhere between 5-20 at a time, so there is a great opportunity for individual coaching.

With the ten-week program, we also have weekly assigned “homework” and need to submit videos to have our form and efficiency scrutinized, so I am really hoping to improve upon my skills and eventually be able to throw around some heavier weights! 😉

Fabletics

If you didn’t realize from any of my other workout posts, part the biggest part of any workout is looking cute. Obviously. 😉 While I will admit I get a bit of a referral points if you happen to use my signup link for Fabletics, I am loving their capris that I just got! And you get your first outfit for only $25 with free shipping. How could you not do that?!

I do not have any fancy formal review, nor swanky product-specific pictures, but I rocked my second attempt at 14.3 in them and was more than pleased with their comfort, style, and fit. And who knew I could rock colorful capris?! Seriously, check them out right now.

Have you listened to my podcast? What do you think?
I’ll admit, I haven’t yet. But that’s just cause I haven’t been running *near* enough yet this year. When I get running a lot, I get podcasting a lot!

Ever meet someone from Twitter?
YES. Like a million people at Blend, which is why you should come [subtle hint?].

What’s your favorite man part?
Um. What? I don’t even think I know how to answer this …

Ever run an untrained race? In the polar vortex?
No, but I did a race that was about 15 degrees or so in November. They just weren’t calling it the polar vortex. And yes, it’s damn cold! Layer up next time ;). Lots of layers is KEY.

Who’s your favorite Crossfit celeb?
I feel like I need to learn about Crossfit celebs. I have no clue!

Would you wear colorful pants to workout in?
I own electric blue and hot pink capris :). I can’t WOD in my pink ones (they just fall down – they’re just for running, when they fall down … less) but I love my blue ones. They are, unfortunately getting a decent hole in them though and look kinda janky. So, I wear them anyway … haha!

I have also run a 10K untrained… remember how I started crossfit and oh yeah, forgot!? I also was mad at myself about 4 miles in… but it wasn’t 14* I have run in cold races, but not that cold… So excited to hear about the Oly clinics/classes! I’m looking forward what my gym has to offer once we move to our bigger space next month! (PS love the shirts!!)

So…. i have been trying to run since 14.2 and my back is like “Nuh-uh”. Had you already done the deadly deadliest wod when you ran your 10k? I am signed up for a marathon relay and my portion is about 5 and a half miles. I’m SO worried that my back is going to kill me! Any tips?

Running tips? From me? HAHAHAHA. 😉

I forgot how to run between November and now. Seriously. Like nothing felt right.. Hoping to get back into m weekly run just to not feel like I am going to die anytime..

My favorite man part? Hmm. The shoulders. I mean what can’t you do with some nice broad shoulders? You can lift heavy things, you can have your lady friend rest her head on them, they help with that delicious looking v-shapes bod, oh and the women folk can also rest their legs on shoulders as well………….. Yup. =P

Oh and I agree that looking awesome is the most important part of a workout. By far. Hands down. As I never say – look good, workout gooder.

I ran an untrained half marathon last year in the cold. It was hard but I felt good about not losing a ton of fitness last winter. This year I did some training on the treadmill ugh. I do love wearing cute workout clothes! Good job on getting through the 10th untrained and in the cold!

I checked out your podcast. I can only watch a little bit because I am on a limit data package for my wifi. I liked it and thought it is a cool idea to do. My favorite man part is a nice ass. Especially one that looks good in a pair of jeans!
