in Lady Lifter Spotlight

As a single girl with no real obligations other than a full-time job and a dog, I often wonder how some people manage to keep in shape with balancing a load that includes more than just a simple life! This week’s spotlight is on Emily, a wife and mother of two, working full-time, and still managing to put aside time for herself to work on her own fitness.

What types physical activity do you enjoy?

Weight lifting

How did you get started in weight lifting? How long have you been lifting?

I started a year ago, just after the birth of my second baby, my husband and I saw some photos of female fitness models when I was about 7 months pregnant and I was blown away – I knew there and then what I wanted to achieve and it was the perfect way for me to lose my baby weight.

Favorite workout or lift?

I love leg days because I get a great amount of satisfaction in using the power rack and doing deadlifts, especially when I’m lifting as much, if not more than the guys. At the moment my favourite exercise is the cable cross over, simply because I love to see all the muscles splitting across my shoulders!

Current lifting-related goal:

I have recently moved from the Smith Machine to the power rack to do my squats, now I’m aiming to squat as much as I was on the Smith, 80kg, but also having perfect form and getting to at least parallel if not lower;

Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:

I was really intimidated by other people in the free-weights area when I first joined the gym but soon realized there’s no need to be.

Be brave and take the first step in weightlifting, if you’re anything like me you’ll adore it and it’ll become a real passion which you’ll soon realize makes you look and feel fantastic!

My husband has been the real inspiration for my transformation; he’s always been encouraging and has guided me through the correct diet as well as setting up all my training programs.
