in Lady Lifter Spotlight

I won’t say that turning 31 has made me feel a bit hesitant in my athletic abilities, but for some reason seeing athletes thrive that are older than me gives me plenty of hope for my future. šŸ˜‰Ā This week’s spotlight is a reformed yo-yo cardio-junkie who only discovered the love of heavy lifting less than two years ago and has been hitting PRs ever since! Her positive attitude and determination makes me proud to feature her this week!

What types physical activity do you enjoy?

CrossFit, baseball/softball, roller skating

How did you get started in weight lifting?Ā

I had heard about CrossFit-style workouts from my fiancƩ; and when he was describing it to me, I never would have thought it was something that I could do. So I continued going to the gym, running on the treadmill and attending kickboxing classes; but not really seeing any results.

As a petite woman, the littlest amount of weight I gain shows drastically. One day, after a night out ā€“ and most of the photos surfacing on Facebook ā€“ someone very close to me calls to say that none of the clothes I was wearing was flattering and that I just looked fat in it. Imagine how upset and deflated this can make you feelā€¦

Coincidentally, a week later, I found a Groupon for a 5-week boot camp class guaranteeing weight loss. I figured, 5 weeks to lose weight? Sure! The 5 weeks has turned into a year and half commitment (and then some). Lifting has provided me the confidence to wear anything I want, not worry about my weight, and to care for myself first and foremost. It has changed my life and outlook. And that someone very close to me has complimented numerous of times since then ā€¦ and guess what? I actually weigh more now than I did then, but a dress size that I havenā€™t seen since high school.

Favorite workout or lift?

ā€œNancyā€ 5 rounds of 400m run; 15 Overhead Squats

Itā€™s my favorite, not because of the name, but because of the progression that I have seen myself in running. The hardest movement for me during any WODs are the runs, it is my Everest! So to have 5 rounds of a quarter mile run paired with a lift based on flexibility (and not on strength) is something that is fully rewarding.

Current lifting-related goal:

My goal is to improve my deadlift and snatches. So far Iā€™ve maxed on 165lbs on deadlifts ā€“ but my snatches only go to 65lbs.

Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:

Itā€™s all in the hips!

Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s still a common misconception that to lift something heavy, one must have bulging muscles. But learning all of the proper forms of lifting is the key to your successes.

Yikes – I’m WAY older than you!! I used to only run but when I turned 35 that wasn’t cutting it any more. Now I lift and at 43 I’m lifting heavier than ever and running faster than ever!!!
