in Lady Lifter Spotlight

Girl-crushes.

Ladies, you know you all have one. Some girl that you aspire to be like and just admire her physique and hope one day that you can grow up to be just like her.

This week’s spotlight is on one of mine. When I started blogging over a year ago, one of the very first blogs I followed was of a girl named Babs (a year later, I just found out her name isn’t really Babs..). WordPress suggested her to me and I instantly was attracted to her blog header, namely how strong she looked on her pull-up picture. As I followed her blog, the girl (who has a couple of years on me) hit PR after PR, nailing big lift after big lift, completing Crossfit workout after Crossfit workout, handstands, muscle-ups, you name it- she does it. And now she’s into figure competitions.. The amazing, strong, woman continues to inspire me on a daily basis, and now it’s time for you to meet Babs!

How did you get started in weight lifting? How long have you been lifting?

I started weight lifting years ago, but didn’t really get into it, with goals, until I was in my mid-twenties. I have been following CrossFit since August of 2007. That all started because of the movie 300. The men in the movie were trained by a guy that was originally part of CrossFit. And so it began…

Heavy squats or pull-ups/muscle-ups

Current lifting-related goal:

Look good naked! Ha. I recently competed in my first bikini competition. I dedicated seven months to that particular goal. I am deciding on what is next. Outside of that, general well-being.

Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:

Go slow. It will take time to see changes, but they will happen. Be consistent in order to see your goals happen. Also, find a reputable gym. One that has a solid strength base to it and thoughtful workouts.

Congrats on the competition! I just competed in figure for the first time a couple weeks ago. I think I’ll train for one in October and try bikini this time. 🙂 What was your favorite thing and least favorite thing about training.

Thank you! Congrats to you as well!

I found the diet and training both challenging. I continued doing CrossFit the entire time and adding on shoulder, back and leg work. I trained between 2-2.5 hours, 5 days a week. It was totally worth every bit of sweat though.

Everyone at my box thinks crossfit and figure competitions are two sports that completely clash with each other. We had a competition once that shared a venue with a bodybuilding show and everyone was rolling their eyes at the competitors–I definitely sensed some rivalry! I’m curious how your crossfit friends feel about you competing in a bikini competition! Are you able to eat the bikini diet while completing crossfit WODs? Can figure competitors and crossfit coexist and *gasp* work out together??? lol

Lisa,

My announcement to the gym was definitely was met with strange looks. When you tell CF women you plan to prance on a stage in stripper shoes and a small bikini, they just look at you. I worked really hard for my training. I did CrossFit and extra work on the side. Once the open came around and I had a contributing score on the first workout and gave them all a run for their money on the rest of the workouts, their views abruptly changed. From that point on, everyone was super supportive. The morning of my first show, my phone and fb were full of well-wishing. They can totally coexist. I actually got better at CF during the process. 🙂

Love this post! I am actually looking into doing my 1st bikini competition along with crossfit. Any advice you can give me? Meal planning, coaching or anything? I don’t know where to start with this and I really want to do it alongside crossfit because I don’t want to leave crossfit!

Thank you 🙂

Thanks for the comment, Christy! Might have better luck getting a response from her clicking through her blog and asking.. not sure she comes back to answer questions here! 🙂
