Michigan Warrior Dash 2013: I survived!

in Running

While Crossfit is so much of a physical sport, it is so much mental as well. As I continue to get stronger physically, I am also growing so much stronger mentally. From almost the beginning, I have pushed myself into the uncomfortable: participating in the Crossfit Open, competing in my first Crossfit competition, running an entire 10k. And with each of those things I felt a new sense of pride and accomplishment, and almost all I credit to my Crossfit mentality.

Last November, pre-Crossfit days, I signed up for Warrior Dash on a whim since it was a super cheap price for the summer event. I managed to convince my Twitter-buddy-turned-real-friend, Dawn, to sign up as well, and then it was long forgotten. Once I finished Dirty Girl Mud Run last month, I remembered I had signed up for the mud/obstacle run and then the nerves set in. While Dirty Girl did have mud and obstacles, to me it was more of a fun-run compared to the more competitive Warrior Dash.

But alas, I had already signed up.. and didn’t even look up the obstacles for fear I would change my mind.. Dawn made the trek to the Detroit area with her soon-to-be-19-year-old son, and the three of us got pumped up to race!

It had rained all morning and the weather was chilly when we got there, but it ended up being perfect running/obstacle-ing weather!

Without an extra person to take picture, there really is no fancy footage from the event, but of all of the obstacles, I loved every minute of it except for two.

The first “issue” came up where we had to “swim” to a dock in the middle of this swampy pond. The water was about chest-deep, so it was not too bad. Once we made our way over the floating dock, the lifeguards were on standby, alerting everyone “10ft deep water all of the way across!” Now, I can do a mad doggie-paddle. However, jumping into 10ft deep water is not on my list of life skills. So I was in a bit of a panic.

Underage-lifeguard boy told me there were ropes on the side to assist. I carefully grasped the rope for dear life and followed it safely to shore. Phew!

The only other obstacle I struggled with was a tall balance-beam, probably about 15-20ft (?) above ground that you needed to walk across. Well, make it across. I opted to scoot. 😉

Despite having two minor freak-outs I am quite proud that I did not skip any obstacles! I had such a good time with Dawn and was so happy to be able to bond over another race with her!!

Aside from the fun on the course itself, the scenery and people-watching was also so fun! And by people-watching I may mean boy-watching.. And by boy-watching, I may mean this guy in white that we snuck a picture of and that I hoped someone would recognize when I tweeted about it.. 😉

No, I’m not desperate.. but really.. he was a looker..

But even with the great views, one of the best parts of the day that I was looking forward to was the amazing turkey leg afterwards! I mean really, how is a girl like me single? 😉

Okay, if my turkey leg wasn’t going to attract the men, surely this pose would..

But nope.. no phone numbers this time around.. hehe. 😉

I had such a blast at this race and cannot wait to do it again next year!

Oh, how I hated the water obstacle. I blogged about my nemesis. I’m glad to hear they added people giving advice/info about the depth of the water and pointing out the ropes on the side. I’m not sure those ropes were there last year, but if they were, no one told me about them! As hard as it was to get up onto the float (the water seemed higher than chest level to me! I know I’m short, but still…), the worst part by far was jumping in on the other side and ending up submerged in the water. Eep. I ended up doing the backstroke to shore with my race buddy helping me. Swimming is not my strong suit, despite being a Pisces!

So glad you had fun! Great recap. Alas, I do not know that gentleman. 😉

You certainly look like a warrior post race with the hat, mud and humongous leg of meat!!! Sounds like it was a good race to sign up for last Nov 🙂

Aughhh you’re brave, woman! I don’t think I could do one of those. At least not the water part! Hilarious about the white shirt guy. Surely someone’s gotta recognize him! Turkey leg pic- crazy hot! 😉

Haha.. girl, if you can run, this is not a big deal at all! That was the worst part for me (i mean, aside from the scary obstacles.. hehe).

Totally do it!

And thanks for the compliment on the turkey leg pic.. hahaha.. 😉

I am glad that you had so much fun! I hated WD when I did it a couple of years ago. I was miserable the whole time and it was really disorganized. We didn’t even stay for the turkey legs. I will never do another WD again. Especially since my hubby and I paid $65 a piece. It was so not worth it.

Did you find the boy yet????? 😉

Bummer, Tasha! It seemed really well put together here and since I got in for only $35, I didn’t have much to complain about 😉

And no luck! :((
