H.U.M.A.N Healthy Vending – Giveaway! (contest closed)

So.. it’s confession time.

I tend to eat pretty strict paleo Monday to Friday, giving myself the weekends to enjoy the things I am deprived up during the week. But once in a while. I let a “cheat” slip in. Yesterday, I ate a bag of Peanut M&Ms. It was totally an accident though, so it doesn’t count, right? Hehe.

Let me explain. 🙂 I have had one of those weeks where I just want to eat everything. I blame adding some running into my schedule; my body is making sure that I am maintaining the muscle that I have worked so hard for and wants to make sure I stay fueled. And hormones. Always the lady hormones that get in the way. Logical solution would be to continue to load up on the “good” carbs: sweet potatoes, squash,etc. With proper meal planning and prepping this is simple. I carry a massive lunch bag to work which is stockpiled with goodies daily, but this week I have not been packing enough to ward off the hunger cravings.

I got into the afternoon slump and wanted a snack and had exhausted my supply of fruits and veggies. My go-to snack in our work’s vending machine is Nature Valley Oats and Honey granola bars, and while it is 0% Paleo, I like them. Yes, there is sugar in it. And sugar syrup. And soy. But it does the job.

The bad part about running out of snacks at work is that the vending machines only take cash. And I’m a no-cash kind of girl; so when a snack craving hits, I either need to work through it or bum $1 off a coworker. Who wants to do that? Well today, I sucked it up and did.

So I marched my crisp $1 over to the vending machine, started typing in the code (156) for the granola bar 1.. 5.. (bill accepted message); hmm.. did it already do the 1-5? Should I just press the final digit or start over? 1… Well, then it gave me item 151. Peanut M&Ms. Bleh. I was desperate. 🙂

Anyway, I ate them; they were tasty, and then I rode a nice sugar high for the rest of the evening.

But aside from my snacking habits, what sort of vending items are there anyway? We have a Coke machine which is like a revolving door of people going in and out getting their $1 20oz. And so many people eating M&Ms everyday,on purpose, or just out of convenience. And there are those like me that choose the least evil snacks in the mix.

So what if your only options were healthier options?

I was quite excited when I was contacted by H.U.M.A.N. Healthy Vending to check out their concept of replacing vending machines in schools and other businesses with more healthy options. While I will admit their initial offering does not cater to a paleo lifestyle, I find the options much more viable than M&Ms and Mrs. Freshley’s Buddy Bars. With options like Clif Bars, Luna Bars, Odwalla bars, and LARABARS (I eat one daily, so this is nice!), and beverages such as coconut water and all-natural fruit juices, it is a logical solution for companies that are trying to become more health-conscious!

I also have found out they have placed vending machines in Crossfit boxes that offer paleo-friendly snacks in them like low-sodium jerky, Planter’s unsalted nuts, Lifestyle Foods’ apple slices, Bunny Luv carrots and Urawk Energy Bars. SOLD! 🙂


Founded by a local (Detroit area) father-son duo, the health and fitness enthusiasts’  rule for choosing snacks is based on the following:

HUMAN gives preference to foods and beverages without the following additives: artificial preservatives, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose syrup, and MSG.

Their website has so much more information than I could fit without droning on and on in this post, but I am thrilled to hear about this idea, and even passed along the information to our work’s Wellness Committee to see if it is something we can put into place. I mean, 24/7 access to LARABARs- you cannot go wrong there! 😉

Not at all, Lisa.. and most things aren’t even paleo. But I tried the Mojo Clif bar and the Luna bar and they are SO good! Great “cheat” snacks.. or at least something to indulge in after your Whole30 🙂

My favorite junk food treats are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! Love them! I’m not around vending machines that often, but if I was I would want to see more fruit or packages of almonds. Great giveaway!!

I looked in to this company several months ago. I’m currently looking for a career change and was very loosely considering starting up with human healthy vending. I love the idea but I worry that the average person is happy eating junk and wouldn’t want only healthy options. I would like to see these machines around though in case I ever need something healthy in an emergency.

I hate to agree.. but I think you might be right.
I was on our company’s Employee Morale committee and the outcome was adding a popcorn machine.. and they are in talks of providing energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster for free, and changing our $1 pop machine to free pop. Nononononono!

I love granola and granola bars 🙂 I want to see Clif bars everywhere… it gives me my bar fix while also being something I can be proud to feed my family. We keep a drawer stocked with a variety of bars for snacks or breakfast one the go! Great giveaway ♥

My fav junk food would be anything that is chocolate related.

I would love it if vending machines would put more protein packed bars into there line up. I know a few people that have forgotten their protein bars at home and that only other thing to have is the subway that they recently opened in our gym. I rather not have subway right after working out and save it for a “off” day instead as a treat.

Actually, my kids’ school is replacing their vending machines with healthier options like this! I don’t remember the name of the company though, but the concept is similar to this one. My company doesn’t have vending machines — worse — we have a 7-Eleven right next door, and I’m pretty sure that the employees here single-handedly keep that shop in business.

I will get Peanut M&Ms from time to time – they have protein! – but I usually just get nada. I wish our vending machine had hummus and fresh fruit. They do have salads but the dressing is crud.

Utz Salt and Vinegar chips are my FAVORITE. I wish I never ever tried them lol. I refuse to buy them because i’d easily devour a bag.

At my home school district, early when I was in high school, they took out all of the vending machines in the middle school and high school (only had soda) and did not allow AS student body to sell candy to raise $$. They also did an overhaul on the school lunches. I came from a small school district, so we were kind of ahead of the game. LA school district though is huge, so there has been alot of political stuff preventing them from making the same changes.

I forgot that we had 2 vending machines at my grad school…I never have cash and I live nearby so I can just walk home to get a snack 🙂 would be nice to see healthier options there too! Fave snack….hmmm…depends on how I’m feeling. Gummy bears/worms, skittles or starburst! Sometimes twix or snickers!

I love chocolate too. But I have found a chocolate bar at whole foods that is 80% cocoa (or however you spell it) and just one square of that will put the cravings at bay. But since I really cleaned up my diet, I haven’t been having cravings.

I would love that! I have gotten better with my vending machine snack selection. I surprise myself because I have gotten so much better. I usually go for nuts or trail mix. Tuesday nights are the worst, because I have class. Plus they have been slowly changing the vending machine at my boys school and it helps supplement the eating habits at I have established at home. This is a great giveaway!

My favorite “junk” food treat is definitely chocolate chip cookies or a cupcake. mostly for the icing. I’d like to see more vending machines have packets of cocoa roasted almonds since they are my go to snack!

I have been a hunger monster this week too. Maybe it’s something in the air? I don’t know. Unfortunately, my choices haven’t been as good as yours. But whatever – it happens and life goes on 🙂

Healthy vending machines are such a must. Whenever I take a road trip through Pure Michigan, stopping at rest stops is basically like a food desert. The vending machines are just crap!

My non-paleo cheats this week (already monday and I have all of my cheats in)..

Bagel sandwich, post St. Patrick’s day drinking.. needed the carbs to pick up the leftover alcohol in my system.

& blueberry pancakes with the boy this morning (he offered to take me to breakfast and I just COULDN’T say no!)

But I’ve been SO good since I’ve started paleo (Feb 1st) that I’m not allowing myself to get down about it!

I give in to anything with peanut butter! I could live on a jar a day if I could.

I’d like to see more beverages that are *actually* naturally sweetened without all the crazy sugar replacements. Who knows what they do to your brain??
