Crossfit Games Open – Workout 13.1

I know a lot of my followers are runners, but don’t get too excited about the title of this post. The first workout in the Crossfit Games Open 2013 was cleverly titled 13.1 (I think because of the year 2013, first workout of the games), and did not translate into a half marathon by any means. 😉

The Crossfit Games Open is pretty much the tryouts, in a sense, for the Crossfit Games, a competition to name the fittest person on Earth. Most people who compete have a small chance of making it to the next round, but it is a great way to test your current athletic ability and see how you rank among all of the other Crossfit athletes that participated.

Then Open lasts for five weeks, with the workouts posted on Wednesday nights, and a deadline of the following Sunday to complete the workout  and submit scores online. There are some strict rules for the workouts to level the playing field across all boxes, and all participants need to be judged while completing the workout to make sure the basic standards are being followed. This past Wednesday, the first workout was released. And everyone in the Crossfit world freaked out.

The workout was announced as follows (for women, with the same workout for men at higher weights):

Proceed through the sequence below completing as many reps as possible in 17 minutes of:
40 Burpees
45 pound Snatch, 30 reps
30 Burpees
75 pound Snatch, 30 reps
20 Burpees
100 pound Snatch, 30 reps
10 burpees
120 pound Snatch, as many reps as possible

To see a perfect version of this workout, checkout my favorite Crossfitter (and Michigan native), Julie Foucher. Seriously, my idol, and proof that the whole “lifting makes you bulky” myth is totally untrue.

So.. that’s a lot of burpees, coupled with some heavy snatches. Prior to this, the max I ever snatched was 55lbs, so my goal was to use the 17 minutes to make it through the first two sets of burpees, and one set of snatches, with time left to attempt the 75lb snatches. This workout was hard (but really, aren’t they all?). It was pretty awesome though, since a lot of people from the box were all doing it together on Saturday morning, comparing tips and tricks ahead of time, cheering eachother on, and sharing scores afterwards. It was a great community exercise, if nothing else.

I started strong with the first set of burpees, pacing myself per the advice of many others.

Then came the 45lb snatches. I was pretty confident that I would be able to complete the 30 reps of these, but took my time and pushed through them.

I finished my first round of snatches with a total time of 8:26 elapsed. Not that important to me, but the first round of snatch time will be used as a tiebreaker for those who make it to the top, but have the same number of reps. Then, back to burpees..

The next set of burpees was rough. My pace dropped considerably, but I was able to finish the burpees with plenty of time left to attempt the 75lb snatches!

And… it wasn’t happening.

Meh.. nope.

But I had an absolutely blast! I do complain about coming in last at Crossfit often, or not being as good as I think I can be, but in a workout like these, I still walked out of there feeling awesome. If you want to check out the long version of the picture snippets from above, I have the whole 17 minutes of torture recorded on YouTube! 😉

My final score was 100, which means I made 100 reps total, which was my goal since I knew 75lbs was a bit high for my smatch. As of now, I am in 2,484th place in my region, and 37,860th worldwide. Nice stats huh?

I am anxiously awaiting Workout 13.2 and have absolutely no idea what it will bring! Last year, the first week was 7 minutes of burpees, and the second week had increasing snatches, so this workout combined the first two weeks. If that is any indication of what may be next, box jumps, wall-balls, and double-unders may be in the near future!

(Don’t forget if you want to WOD in style, be sure to check out my current giveaway!!)

Are you registered for the Open? Do you like to compete even though you know you are far from the top?

GO girl! I love/hated this workout. Hated it because of the burpees, but loved it because I got through 25 of the 75lb snatches, with a previous 1RM of 80 I was stoked!

Such an awesome feeling! I had plenty of time to practice 75, but that would be a 20lb PR so wasn’t too disappointed. 🙂

Trying to “get” the movement a bit better!

Congrats on going to your first Crossfit event! I don’t even know how to do those snatches, so I would probably just prefer to do lots of burpees and sprints 🙂 I also don’t know what your statistics mean (whether they are good or what), but all that matters is how you feel and since you felt awesome, I’d say you did great!!!

Haha, I guess I could have explained that. To get an idea, the best of the best right now are averaging a score of 200, so 200 total reps.

NICE WORK!!!!!!! Once you get the movement down, and drop “ass to grass” you’ll totally rock the snatches! Congrats love!

Thanks, girl! I can’t even overhead press 75 so not sure how to keep it up even if I got low! Gotta practice! 🙂

Girl, you are awesome! Look at all those burpees. I really admire you and you are definitely an inspiration. I struggle doing 12 burpees so this is amazing for me to watch!

Great job! (And I did get excited when I saw “13.1” so there was a second of disappointment that it didn’t mean half marathon but I got over that pretty quickly reading about your event). That’s great that you were all supporting each other!

Girl, I am so proud of you. I’m glad you had fun. That IS what it’s all about! Since I am not a runner, 13.1 didn’t even correlate until you said it! Whew. Thank goodness!

Just keep on keepin on! One of my friends found this Julie Foucher gem. I’m guessing it’s when she was first starting out.

Reminds you that we all gotta start somewhere 🙂
