Double-Under, Double-Under, Oops..

As one continues on her Crossfit journey, she will realize there are certain things that may have never even crossed her mind until she started Crossfit. Like saying goodbye to baby soft hands, or finding random bruises on your neck, shoulders, forearms, thighs, shins, etc.

calloused hands pull-up rip crossfit hands

While I have learned to take pride in my calloused hands and wear my battle wounds proudly, one thing that I did not expect to happen when I started doing Crossfit is the not-so-sexy issue that happens when doing double-unders, box jumps, or other fast jumping movements. While it’s much more common in women who have had children, I have found if I do not “void my bladder” to put it PC, sometimes things just happen! And even if I do take precautions to use the facilities before class, and even in the middle of the class before a WOD, it does not always end perfectly contained. double under whiz

Clearly an embarrassing issue, I was a bit relieved when Crossfit HQ released a YouTube video letting me know I was not alone!

So yes. It happens. And since I think I have a fear of dehydration, I consume at least a gallon of water during the day before workouts and probably another 16oz right before class, plus more water during the workouts. While not a bad thing, water is not intended to stay in your system.

When offered an opportunity to try out Poise panty-liners, I immediately thought, “Nope, not for me!” (For period purposes, I have always been a tampon user, and just purchased a Diva Cup that I may try soon..). But then after having multiple occasions of frustrated double-under, double-under, oops, I thought why not be open minded and give it a try.

poise discreet

Being discreet to carry from the gym back to the restroom was always a good selling point. But trying it out was the true test. We completed a WOD last week that involved 10 to 1 push-presses and kettlebell swings with 20 double-unders in between each round. So, 10 push-presses, 10 KB swings, 20 double-unders, 9 push-presses, 9 KB swings, 20 double-unders, etc. While it did take a minute to get used to wearing the panty-liner, once I started the workout, I forgot it was even there.

After a hot, sticky, sweaty WOD, these liners did just as they were advertised to do! Absorbent and odorless, and potentially a new gym bag staple.

I haven’t had this particular problem but good for you for being brave and talking about it! 🙂

My must-have for staying clean and fresh at the gym is moisture-wicking workout gear (no plain t-shirts for this gal!) and a cool shower ASAP when I’m done – because if I don’t leave the gym drenched in sweat, I didn’t work hard enough! 🙂

Ouch, your poor hands!

Oh, yeah, I have this problem a lot! When I work out early a.m. before breakfast, it isn’t as much of a problem, but when I work out in the evening after I’ve been eating and drinking all day it’s a guaranteed problem. And at the end of every race (especially the 5K) it’s definitely a problem — in fact, I haven’t pushed hard enough in a race if I haven’t peed myself! Which is why I ALWAYS have a towel for the car for the drive home. And I learned to always wear black bottoms (moisture wicking of course) so that the “problem” isn’t quite as noticeable. I’d love to race in a cute pair of colored shorts, but then I’d obviously look like I peed myself!

That is just too funny and cute. Whatever works though…it’s better to have the hands protected because trying to lift any weight for the several days that the blisters/pulled skin heals is a bear.
Pretty much the only way I feel clean and fresh is with a shower and doing the entire get ready routine.

Kim August 19, 2013 at 11:03 am

Yikes – your hands look like they hurt!
I rarely have issues while running (thankfully!!) but jumping – all the time anymore. One day I did 4300 jumping jacks (normal, right?) and since I was doing them in sets of 100, I had to make several quick pit stops and even still felt like I had pretty much peed myself by the time I was done.

Haven’t had any issues during working out, but I’ve not done anything quite as intense that might trigger an ‘oops’ (but if I did I’d probably go for a liner too!).

Ways to stay fresh. Keep a package of face/body wipes handy so I don’t smell so bad after a run if I need to walk around after!

I have not had an oops moment but coregasms are almost as hard to hide when it’s happening – LOL Makes for an interesting run. I can’t run without needing to pee right before and also sometimes during the first mile… (TMI?) Here I thought it was because I was getting older! LOL
Are the Poise PL’s good? I associate them with adult diapers in my head so I always stick with Carefree or Always.
I must have moisture wicking clothes and black or dark gray bottoms are a must… and face cloths to do a sweat quick clean up before driving home.

I used to be a big time gym rat and never had issues. However, when I got into long distance backpacking, it’s inevitable that issues will happen and you don’t have a shower readily available. Also, you really don’t want to carry any additional items (pads) to make you load even heavier. I know you may thing that they are light…but every ounce adds up. So, my only hope on the days I’m in the woods, I pray for a river, stream or lake to clean up. I also would carry a small container of powder that I would use for “wetness.”

I have yet to try crossfit although I have friends and family who LOVE it. I do lift heavy in the gym and I am worried about using the diva cup while squatting heavy weight. Have you used it while squatting. My concern would be that it could fall out when “bearing down”. Hope that’s not TMI. Just started using my diva cup today and I love it but “leg/glute day” is tomorrow. Not sure if I’m brave enough to try it yet. Thanks!

Obviously super late in responding… but yes, diva cup is squat-approved 😉

Hope you are still enjoying it!! Hehe.
